| BELIHULOYA, is a very picturesque and romantic hamlet situated 160km from Colombo in the historical Sabaragamuwa province and an ideal location to be in for few days. The beauty and the serenity of the location, surrounding mountain ranges, intermittent patches of forests and paddy fields and the famous Belihuloya River , which borders it, add to the attraction.
This is a climatically transitional area, which links the dry and wet zones at an altitude of less than 1500m. As a result, the vegetation it consists is moist semi-evergreen forests, tropical savanna forests, dry patana grasslands and montane temperate forests. The vegetation in this environment has made this location an exciting one for the serious as well as the casual nature lover. The average temperature in the area is about 28.3 degrees Celsius and the mean annual rainfall is between 1,875 and 2,500mm.
The earliest evidence of steel making in the ancient world, dating back to 300 BC [ that's almost 2300 years before ! ] has been found in the Belihuloya area.
The pre historic settlements of the area date back to a very early period, as proved by recent cave excavations as well as those carried out on other sites. The earliest settlement dates back to some 29,000 -35,000 years ( Homosapian balangodensis ).

Evening Trail to Kinchigune Village . This trail could be done as an Agro Trail / Trekking Trail Birding Trail or a Nature trail focused on your interests.
This diverse trail of approximately 06 kms begins at Kinchigune Eco Lodge running alongside a riverine forest and the Belihuloya river itself. During the trail, you will venture through paddy fields, across rivers and past local village houses with their extensive vegetable plots. It is an ideal opportunity to learn a bit about the local agricultural systems and simple way of village living. Along the way, you will also witness several types of beautiful birds and butterflies and some charming waterfalls. The trail finishes at River Garden Resort. The whole journey takes between 02 and 04 hours, depending on how often you want to stop for rest, photos, or simply to take in the wonderful surroundings.
Arrive at the Kinchugune Eco Lodge
Our spacious KINCHIGUNE ECO LODGE is located in the "Kinchigune" Village area of Belihuloya, with fabulous views of the surrounding mountains and the "Samanalawewa" reservoir. This village house which is more than 100 years old has been restored using traditional architectural methods such as cadjan (weaved coconut palm leaf) to cover the clay tiled roof. It still has its mud walls, mud spread floor, kithul poles in windows etc. and is furnished with antique (restored) traditional chairs and beds. Set in a shady garden interspersed with a variety of herbs and trees, guests can even pluck a jack fruit from one of the trees and learn to cook it the traditional Sri Lankan way! This Eco Lodge has a single room and a Double room [which could be converted to a triple] providing enough space even for a family ! Additional bedding could be requested in the main living area.Tiled Bathroom with toilet is attached to the lodge and has a wash basin and a Hot and Cold water shower.
