Leaving for the Forest Exploration after lunch. (any no. of hours)

sinharaja rain forest sri lankaSINHARAJA RAINFOREST is a world heritage site, which can also be described as a Tropical Lowland Rain Forest or Tropical Wet Evergreen Forest. Whatever its ‘technical’ name is, it is undoubtedly a rich treasure trove of nature with a great diversity of habitats and a vast repository of Sri Lanka’s endemic species found nowhere else in Sri Lanka. Bird Watching in this ecosystem is particularly interesting because it is home to 95% of the endemic birds of Sri Lanka! Named as a world heritage site in 1989, this lowland evergreen rain forest is steeped in deep legend and mystery. The word ‘Sinharaja’ means, Lion (Sinha) King (Raja), and it is popular belief that the legendary origin of the Sinhala people is from the union between a princess and the lion king who once lived in the forest!

‘KUDAWA’ ECO TEAM CAMP is located on a peninsula in the forest and surrounded by two rivers (deep enough for swimming) and just beyond a tea plantation (where you will see the traditional tea pluckers in action).  Even without leaving the camp itself, so much can be seen – so let the nature come to you!

The peaceful camp is an ideal location for early morning Bird Watching before a fascinating nature trail through the forest. Forget any ideas about cramped tents and sitting on the ground for meals – this is camping in style!  The camp is set up prior to your arrival, transporting in comfortable tents, a fully equipped kitchen, chairs and tables, hammocks, flushable toilets, showers and even cold beer. On your return from the afternoon nature trail, you will be welcomed with a hearty barbecue meal in a magical setting – the whole area is lit up with traditional flame torches and a roaring campfire. So sit back, relax and let our experienced staff cater to your every need

These babies will be looked after by the Wild life Department till they grow up to an age where they can survive on their own.

BELIHUL OYA is a very picturesque and romantic hamlet situated about 160km from Colombo in the historical “Sabaragamuwa” province. This zone is a climatically transitional area linking the wet & dry zones and the hill country & the low country. This very important location has made it one of the places in the country with the highest bio-diversity. River Garden Resort is built in this little hamlet.

nature trails in sri lanka, trekking in sri lankaIn the ancient times people living in this area have been engaged in Agriculture and the Steel industry. It is said, that these villagers have manufactured weapons like spears, swords and knives for the one time great Sinhala king “Dutugemunu”. It is also said, that the manufacturers of the world famous “Damascus Sword’ were supplied with steel by these villages.

If we were to look further back in time, even the presence of pre-historic settlements were proved by the finding of skeletal remains of the 29,000 year old pre-historic man “Homosapien balangodensis” in this area, during recent excavations.

Day 05 Belihul Oya – Maha Eliya (Horton Plains) – Satan’s Steps – Belihul Oya (FB)

Leaving after breakfast to Maha Eliya (Horton Plains) Gate entrance in your vehicle. Start trekking inside the park (6km).

trekking trails sri lanka, trekking trails to horton plains sri lankaHORTON PLAINS NATIONAL PARK is undoubtedly one of the world’s best nature reserves.  It is characterized by a beautiful landscape of rolling hills, covered in upper montane forest and wet patana grassland.  In general, the forests are seen on the hilltops or upper slopes and the grasslands in the valleys and lower slopes, eventually giving way to wetland habitats.   Spanning approximately 10,000 hectares the park is also home to a wide variety of flora (57 species, 29 endemic to Sri Lanka) and 24 species of mammals such as Sambar deer, Giant squirrel, Wild boar, Wild hare, Porcupine and Leopard.   For bird enthusiasts, there 87 species (14 of which are endemic), including many migratory birds.  The Plains also feature many interesting attractions such as ‘Bakers Falls’, 'Chimney Pool’ and the famous ‘World’s End’ (a 3700 ft sheer drop that offers fabulous views of the tea estates below and all the way out to the distant southern coastline).

“SATAN’S STEPS” is the name given to this treacherous road by the English Planters of the Colonial Days who, themselves made this road, because of its numerous hairpin bends, steep climb and the ‘devilish’ nature.

We have two options where  we can travel in the vehicle for about 6 km up to “Udaweriya” estate junction & start trekking or start the trek from the gate entrance itself. Distance to  the BambarakandaFalls from the junction is 14km. Along this trail we will cover Kingslyn estate, West Haputale estate and Bambarakanda Falls. From the falls we can either trek for another 6km & get in to the vehicle at Kalupahana to be driven to River Garden or get in to the vehicle near the falls itself.

bambarakanda water fall sri lankaBAMBARAKANDA FALLS
Within a majestic basin-shaped valley bordered by huge steep rocks and dark green forests of pines and tropic trees the highest waterfall of Sri Lanka [240.8m] plunges with two silver ropes over a vertical dark grey wall from the green saddle between Mt.Welihena and Mt. Day 06 - Belihul Oya - Dambana (FB)
We leave after breakfast to get an altogether different experience – to familiarize ourselves of the livelihood of the Vaddha

indigenous people in sri lanka, veddah in sri lankaDAMBANA is a remote jungle village of indigenous people, situated about 300km from Colombo. The population of these indigenous ‘Veddha’ people now consists of only about 350 families, a number significantly reduced from a once thriving community.  The ‘Veddha’ are so influenced by the imposing dominant culture, they risk losing their traditions and what has been their livelihood for centuries. However, they remain determined that their way of life will continue into future generations.  The Chief himself told us on a recent visit to the village that his main worry is that he may not be able prevent the ‘Veddha’ traditions from dying out during his own lifetime.  Visitors to this fascinating village have the opportunity to meet and chat with the people who live there, learn about their traditions, and gain a unique insight into their way of life.  Our visit will also be of a direct financial benefit to the community because, as well as paying them a rent for the campsite and a fee for their involvement in the programme, Eco Team also uses local produce and labour whenever possible.

Our CAMPSITE is located in very close proximity to the Dambana Village itself.  During our stay, the ‘Veddha’ people will visit the camp in their traditional costume in order to perform some traditional dances.  The camp is also close to one of their former hunting grounds, so guests can have the chance to participate in a mock hunt.

  • Leaving Belihul Oya to Dambana.
  • We will be met at the Dambana junction by Team Leader of the Camp and escorted to the camp for a typical and delightful Sri Lankan lunch.
  • After lunch and a little leisure, the visit to the Veddha village and a meeting with the Chief – Wanniyaleththo is arranged followed by the famous “Kiri Koraha” dance, which they perform to invoke blessings of the gods.
  • Back to Camp.
  • Dinner & Overnight stay in Dambana.

Day 07 - Dambana - Knuckles (FB)
Leaving to Knuckles in the morning after breakfast.

trekking trails on knuckles mountain range sri lankaThe KNUCKLES MOUNTAIN RANGE (called so because its appearance resembles a set of knuckles in a closed fist) has been declared a conservation area, and is now known as the KNUCKLES NATIONAL HERITAGE AND WILDERNESS AREA.  The region stretches an impressive 155 sq km that contains five major forest formations, a wide variety of rare and endemic flora and fauna and some breathtaking mountain scenery.  It is a real paradise for those who love to hike or to go on a mountain bike ride, offering numerous trails that journey across clear  streams, through dense forests, past waterfalls, lush tea plantations, terraced paddy fields and colourful  home gardens.  The chance to visit traditional small mountain villages in the area gives an interesting insight into the close-knit atmosphere that such a local community fosters and provides a welcome departure from fast-paced modern day life.

The Eco Team’s Team Leader will meet us at Raththota and escort us to the CAMP AT THE PITAWALA VILLAGE, Riverston. Here we will be welcomed with a refreshing drink and camping rules and regulations. Before lunch is served, guests are free to take a little stroll from the campsite enjoying the surrounding environment.

THE NATURE TOUR in this area would arouse the interest of any nature enthusiast and amaze any botanist or researcher. This wonderful tour will take us through almost all forest types in Sri Lanka in matter of one hour.

At the end of the hard but interesting and educative day, the camp awaits the guests with a warm cup of tea. After an invigorating wash, guests can be at leisure star-gazing, till the hearty barbecue dinner, which generally is not expected in a remote camp, is ready.
