SIGIRIYA ROCK FORTRESS

The ancient city of SIGIRIYA was designated a cultural World Heritage Site in 1982. It is also proposed that the site should be named the eighth wonder of the world, indicating it is in the same league as other international wonders such as the Grand Canyon and Ancient Pyramids. Translated as 'Lion Rock' into English, the name of the monument indicates the way in which visitors used to begin their final ascent to the top - through the open jaws and throat ('giriya') of a lion ('sinha'). Unfortunately, the only remains of this lion figure are the gigantic paws, sculpted into the side of the rock. The topography of the area is flat except for the massive rock outcrop of the fortress itself (which rises an incredible 600 ft up from the green scrub jungle). The unusual rock is particularly interesting due to its flat top (nearly an acre in size), that was used in its entirety to build King Kasyapa's fortress complex, still evident by the presence of the extensive ruins. The Walk from the gate to the summit of this gigantic rock is about 2-1/2km.

Proceed to Polonnaruwa on completion.

Trekking Sri lanka, Hiking Sri Lanka, Trekking in Sri Lanka, Hiking in Sri Lanka, Trekking Tours Sri Lanka, Hiking Tours Sri LankaPOLONNARUWA At nearly 1000 years old, Polonnaruwa is one of Sri Lanka 's ancient capital cities (and part of the famous 'Cultural Triangle'). Although King Vijayabahu 1 was the first to claim the city as his capital, it was King Parakramabahu who made it what it is today, with its massive buildings, ornate parks and the 'pièce de resistance' - a 2500 hectare tank called 'Parakrama Samudra' (' Sea of Parakrama '). The city itself is divided into new and old town with the impressively preserved ruins split into five main areas, including 'The Quadrangle' (a.k.a. 'Terrace of the Tooth Relic'), the Northern City group and the Rest House group (with the royal palace ruins of 'Nissanka Malla'). Due to its reasonably compact layout, the ruins can be easily explored on foot, and with the surrounding area's flat well maintained roads, you can leave the car behind and jump on a bicycle to get around.

On completion return to Kassapa Lions Rock hotel

Day 3 - Knuckles Camp

Trekking Sri lanka, Hiking Sri Lanka, Trekking in Sri Lanka, Hiking in Sri Lanka, Trekking Tours Sri Lanka, Hiking Tours Sri LankaProceed to Knuckles after the breakfast.

Guests will be met at Raththota and driven to the camp at Riverston. Here the welcome will be done with a refreshing fruit / herbal drink and camping guidelines will be explained.

Before lunch is served, guests are free to take a bath from the brook of crystal clear water untouched and unpolluted by man up to that point, flowing near to the campsite.

The Eco Team's Mahoora campsite [Explorer] is situated on a beautiful and open part of a land which is abandoned tobacco cultivation. Just above this is site is small spring-fed lake which has been built for the purpose of irrigating the cultivation below. This spring can now provide water to the campsite.

Trekking Sri lanka, Hiking Sri Lanka, Trekking in Sri Lanka, Hiking in Sri Lanka, Trekking Tours Sri Lanka, Hiking Tours Sri LankaWhen one looks around one gets a panoramic view of the surrounding area with the Mount Riverston and its towers looming above on one side and the famous Pitawala Pathana on another side and a little lower to it.

This site is about a kilometer from the Pitawala road which is a few kilometers off the Pallegama-Riverston road. Turn off to Pitawala road is about 16.5km from Pallegame.

This campsite will offer the campers many trails up to Riverston and the Pitawala Pathana and of course, the drive between Riverston and Pallegama which is through five types of forests and is a botanist's paradise.

The secluded location of this site offers the campers quietude and serenity giving the opportunity of relishing the environment.Trekking Sri lanka, Hiking Sri Lanka, Trekking in Sri Lanka, Hiking in Sri Lanka, Trekking Tours Sri Lanka, Hiking Tours Sri Lanka

A delightful typical Sri Lankan lunch awaits the refreshed guests.

After lunch and a little leisure time, guests would be taken on a nature tour that would arouse the interest of any nature enthusiast and amaze any botanist or researcher. This wonderful tour will take one through almost all forest types in Sri Lanka . If one were to start from Illukkumbura the lowest point, which at only 250ft is covered by the Dry Zone Forest and travel up to Riverston at 4000ft, which area is covered by the Pygmy Forest (top most segment of the montane forest), one will traverse Dry Zone Forest, Wet Zone Forest, Dry Pathana, Montane Forest and end up with Pygmy Forest. What is amazing about this tour is, all these can be encountered within half an hours drive. Separate short hikes into each forest type would be an unforgettable experience. A walk through the Pitawala Pathana, the largest Dry Pathana planes in the island and look down the precipice - a sheer drop of about 1500ft - at the Puwakpitiya valley below, would be another fascinating part of the journey.

Trekking Sri lanka, Hiking Sri Lanka, Trekking in Sri Lanka, Hiking in Sri Lanka, Trekking Tours Sri Lanka, Hiking Tours Sri LankaAt the top, at Riverston, the Montane Forest has become a perfect example of the Pygmy Forest . This feature is resulted by the fact that the blowing in this area is the strongest in the country during the windy season, which is about half the year.

At the end of the hard but interesting and educative day, the camp awaits the guests with a warm cup of tea. After an invigorating wash at the brook, guests can be at leisure stargazing, till the hearty barbecue dinner, which generally is not expected in a remote camp, is ready.

Day 4 - Knuckles Camp

Trekking Sri lanka, Hiking Sri Lanka, Trekking in Sri Lanka, Hiking in Sri Lanka, Trekking Tours Sri Lanka, Hiking Tours Sri LankaWake up for the calling of the feathered one, which would inspire you to do a short birding trail identifying many birds that are in & around the camp.

Breakfast will be served at a convenient time to you with out pushing you to stick to a strict schedule.

Plan for the rest of the day would depend on your choice and where you will speak to the naturalist and select a trail from many options available from Soft to Hard or take it easy and just enjoy the tranquility and the nature by just being there.

ILLUKKUMBURA TO RIVERSTON TREKKING TRAIL. ( Moderate)

Trekking Sri lanka, Hiking Sri Lanka, Trekking in Sri Lanka, Hiking in Sri Lanka, Trekking Tours Sri Lanka, Hiking Tours Sri LankaAlong this walk the guest can observe meager vegetation types in Sri Lanka . Pitawala patana is predominantly covered by grass species. Pitawala patana is an excellent viewpoint in Knuckles area. Riverston or Kirimatiyakanda peak is observed to be covered with mist and this area is exposed to strong winds and as a result walking through the area is sometimes very difficult. The road passes through stunted tree vegetation known as pigmy forests.

ORBETT'S GAP: This is very beautiful location in the Knuckles range of mountains surrounded by a pygmy forest. Down below, at around 3500ft is a tropical montane evergreen forest, which is inhabited by many rare and endemic flora and fauna; such as, endemic Tennent's Horned Lizard, Sri Lanka white-eye, rare Mountain frog ( polypedates eques ), Barne's Cat Snake etc. The route to this location is through Hunnasgiriya, Lulwatta and Kobomella - the distance being 16-1/2km.

Trekking Sri lanka, Hiking Sri Lanka, Trekking in Sri Lanka, Hiking in Sri Lanka, Trekking Tours Sri Lanka, Hiking Tours Sri LankaProceed to Kandy after the breakfast.

KANDY was the last stronghold of the Buddhist political power against colonial powers. It is also the home of the Temple of the Tooth relic. Its architectural monuments date mainly from the 19 th century, when Vikrama Rajashinha went on a building spree, the cost of which hastened the downfall and eventual surrender to the British forces.

DALADAMALIGAWA - The Temple of the Tooth or Dalada Malgawa dates from the 16 th century, though most of the present buildings were built in the 19 th century. Entering the shrine over a moonstone step, you pass a stone depicting the Indian Trekking Sri lanka, Hiking Sri Lanka, Trekking in Sri Lanka, Hiking in Sri Lanka, Trekking Tours Sri Lanka, Hiking Tours Sri Lankagoddess Lakshmi and a wall with frescoes illustrating the Buddhist conception of hell. The upper stories house the relic of the tooth, caged behind the gilded iron bars. Behind the tooth relic sanctuary is a hall with a number of golden Buddha statues and modern paintings, showing Buddha's life and the arrival of Buddhism in the land. We end our tour just before the evening drumming begins, which precedes the ceremonious opening of the window for the public viewing of the casket with the tooth.

"An interesting affair between currents & rapids"....

White Water Rafting

Trekking Sri lanka, Hiking Sri Lanka, Trekking in Sri Lanka, Hiking in Sri Lanka, Trekking Tours Sri Lanka, Hiking Tours Sri LankaThis thrilling adventure on the white water sections of the Kelani River is suitable for amateurs as well as professionals alike. During the river run you will experience the thrill of shooting rapids and the euphoria of making it through. The river's clear water is born in the heart of the peak wilderness reserve and tumbles through a rocky gorge just above Kithulgala.

As the river widens, we pass the scenic location used for the film - "Bridge over the river Kwai" filmed in 1956-, which is also a great place to jump in for a refreshing swim. On a clear day, you could even dive in to see the remains of the actual bridge and carriages used for the film (only for experienced divers with proper equipment.). Our journey, ends close to Kitulgala town where food and snacks are available.

For those who would like to enjoy the river and its wonderful scenery without the thrills and spills of large rapids, we could raft through the flatter section of the lower gorge, suitable for children over six and family groups.

Rafting in the white water sections of the river and through the boulders and rocks create grade 3/4 rapids, which are exhilarating and scenic. On certain occasions, you may encounter even grade 5 rapids.. A briefing is given prior to the river run with instructions on paddling techniques and "man over board" procedures. At the end of the trip an optional riverside lunch buffet could be arranged for groups and large parties.

Lunch at Rafter's Retreat.

Nature walk to the Rainforest after a short relax after lunch.

On conclusion, transfer to Nallatannaiya

You may reach the 2,240 metre high peak - the island's fourth highest - at dawn to witness a glorious sunrise and the mountain's shadow, cast by the rising sun on to the clouds below. Legend has it that, the footprint originally carved in the rock, and, now covered by an oversized reproduction set in cement, was made by the Buddha, on his third visit to the island.

Some believe it is the spot where Adam, from Christian creation myth, first set foot on earth, after being banished from the Garden of Eden. Other Christians believe, it belongs to St. Thomas , the Apostle. To Hindus, the footprint is 'Lord Shiva's.

Trekking Sri lanka, Hiking Sri Lanka, Trekking in Sri Lanka, Hiking in Sri Lanka, Trekking Tours Sri Lanka, Hiking Tours Sri LankaAdam's Peak is also known as the "butterfly mountain", because large numbers of butterflies visit and perish there each year.

The mountain, on the western edge of the island's central massif, looms over the surrounding hills, covered with lush, green jungle. (Peak wilderness sanctuary)

Peak wilderness sanctuary is among the best areas for birds and butterflies in Sri Lanka as well. It usually takes three to four hours to reach the top, but during the pilgrim season, which begins in December and lasts till May , the throng is sometimes so great, it can take over - 30 minutes to move from one step to the other.

The majority of climbers begin their ascent at night in order to arrive at the top in time for a magical sunrise when the mystical shadow of the peak is perfectly cast across the clouds. It is one of those truly unique moments that will live on in your memory long after the aches and pains from the climb have gone! How ever its' possible only from Full Moon day of December to Full Moon Day of May. During other you have the option of doing a day climb and stay at the peak till the sunrise.

Day 8 - Adams Peak – Bogawantalawa – Galpothuthenne  [FB]

After breakfast, drive to the starting point for the day's trek.
Trekking Sri lanka, Hiking Sri Lanka, Trekking in Sri Lanka, Hiking in Sri Lanka, Trekking Tours Sri Lanka, Hiking Tours Sri LankaDepart on trail from Bogawanthalawa - Galpothuthenna (approx 28 km). Packed lunch on the way.
This is a trail of incredible diversity - it will take you through forest, jungle, tea plantation and grassland, with ascents, descents and flat terrain, desolate and inhabited areas, changing vegetation types and some of the most spectacular views in Sri Lanka .
Beginning in the Bogawanthalawa tea plantation itself, you then start a rapid ascent up through jungle terrain. When you come out of the jungle, you reach a more open grassland terrain, similar to the landscape of the famous 'Horton Plains' (which is situated slightly higher up). You are sure to see the footprints of the leopards and sambhur deer that roam here (you may even spot the animals themselves if you are very lucky!). Along the way, you will follow the river, also noticing a number of man-made holes (the result of the gem-mining that goes on in the area).
You will then go back into a scrub jungle area where the next part of the trail takes you on a footpath towards the 'Non-Pereil' tea estate. On the way, you will cross the Belihuloya River - an ideal place to take a break for lunch and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
When you come out of the 'jungle tunnel', you can see for miles beyond, including the 'Samanalawewa' reservoir and the dam itself. You will pass the tea pluckers' homes, vegetable plots, and a small nursery school before reaching the 'Non Pareil' tea plantation itself.

Heading down through the tea plantation, you will get to a sparse and rocky area, you will continue on through forest patches where you can see bear monkeys and a wide variety of birds. This part of the descent is rather steep - the panoramic views are incredible! The last part of the trail leads down through a dense pine tree plantation and finishes.

You will be met by the vehicle at Galpothuthenna and driven to River Garden Adventure Center - Belihuloya for dinner and overnight stay.

The trail goes through a very small village into a completely uninhabited area, characterised by intermittent patches of forest and savanna, eventually leading to the Walawe River . The river marks the 8km point of the trail, but to continue on we cross it at 'Mulgammankada' and hike through the Riverine Forest, alongside and down the river. During the next part of the trail, we will not come across any human habitations, and apart from an occasional small group or two of gem miners, who come to this desolate area and camp out here to mine for gems, one will not meet other humans on the way. After another 2km walk, we come to a beautiful rocky area where there is a waterfall of about 40 ft in height. This waterfall is called 'Hulan Ella' or the 'Walawe Ganga Falls (West)'. The beautiful, serene, and ever-changing forest next to the river and waterfall is home to an abundance of varying flora and fauna. The fauna in this area consists of the occasional elephant, sambhur Deer, Indian Muntjak, flying and giant Squirrels, many birds (Changeable Hawk Eagle, Brown Fish Owl, Stork Billed kingfisher, Gray Hornbill etc.), Lizards (3 endemic), Geckos, Skinks, Snakes, Amphibians, Snails, Butterflies and Fishes.

At the end of 10km walk from 'Hulan Ella' we come to the 'pièce de resistance' - the majestic, breathtaking and awesome ' Duwili Ella Falls '. This waterfall is also called the 'Walawe Ganga Falls (East)'. It plunges a dramatic 80 ft from a level rocky ground into a large deep pool at the base. The falling of the water creates a cloud of spray, resembling a cloud of dust (hence the name 'Duwili Ella' - in Sinhalese, 'Duwili' means 'dust' and 'Ella' is 'waterfall').

The vegetation in the park comprises predominantly of semi-arid thorny scrub, interspersed with pockets of fairly dense secondary forest. Small patches of mangrove vegetation also occur along the coastal lagoons. The park is renowned for the variety of its wildlife (most notably its many elephants) and its fine coastline (associated with beautiful coral reefs). It also boasts a large number of important cultural ruins, bearing testimony to earlier civilizations and indicating that much of the area used to be populated and well developed.

Morning is free for you to enjoy some time on the beach, whilst for those with a hankering for more culture,

Afternoon has the opportunity for an optional visit to Galle by car. An old, walled seaside town, Galle was important as a trading port for the Dutch from the 17th century when the fortress was constructed, but it had undoubtedly been a trading centre since ancient times. There is plenty to see, particularly in the old fort area, which was designated as a World Heritage Site in 1988. Overlooking the sea, the fort ramparts protect the harbour, old houses, churches, warehouses and the Arab quarter. The New Oriental Hotel, originally built in 1684, is the epitome of colonial architecture and worth a visit, if only for the atmospheric bar!
