Leaving Belihuloya around 6.00 am after B'fast or packed breakfast .
Option (A)
From Belihuloya, you would travel 14 km along the main road to Kalupahana to meet the left turn, which leads to Horton Plains and from there another 6km to start the trekking journey.
This particular route has got it's name as "Satan's Steps" due to the steep climb and narrow sharp bends, - mainly hairpin bends. You should not get deceived by the good road condition when you travel first few km's.
One of the main highlights on this route would be the Sri Lanka 's highest Waterfall - 'Bambarakanda Waterfall'- which has a height of 790 ft.. Having a dip in the natural rock pool at the bottom of this fall would be an unforgettable experience.
Distance to the fall from the main road is 06 km and you may have to walk another 01km to get to the rock pool.
Start the climb again through shrub jungle, and at the latter part of the climb you will get in to a tea plantation in the West Haputale area.
This particular road will eventually connect to the Ohiya-Horton Plains main road, when one completes 14 km from the Kalupahana turn off.
Turn to your left & continue your journey to reach the entrance to the Horton Plains(06km), most certainly one of the best nature reserves, which consist of famous world's end, Baker's Falls, Chimmini Pool etc. Approximate hike to cover all these would be 5km. Most of the day both small and big World's Ends are covered with mist and clouds. So, one must have patience to wait at these points for clouds to clear to get a glimpse of steep drops. The big world's end has a sheer drop of 3700 feet.
Option (B)
Transfer will be done to Beli in a vehicle via Ohoiya. We will still cover the Bambarakanda Falls on our way ! |
