“Take a walk on the Wild Side”
Just think: Siddhartha Gauthama left his world of wealth and security, walking out into the world with nothing but the clothes on his back, and eventually found enlightenment – not to mention founding a whole new religion, Buddhism. Abraham, Moses and Jesus all took long walks in the desert. (Even Forrest  ..ump found peace by crossing the country on his feet) It's a truth of human history and philosophy. There's more wisdom to be found on foot than behind the accelerator of your four-wheel drive.

Give a long walk a try !

Expedition Blue Falcon - www.exploring-falcons.com

In April 2008, Eco Team facilitated a 14 night expedition covering a variety of terrain, wildlife, and community interest for a group of UK cadets. The expedition included  a 3 day Duke of Edinburgh Award 37mile expedition where they faced new wildlife, nature , survival techniques plants, miles and heights. They navigated themselves but with specialist guides from our team in the wings who are familiar with the country and treks. Other than the above, this particular expedition covered.

A joint cadet program where the Fulham cadets met their counterparts in Sri lanka

A 3 day charitable project contributing to a developing community in need of support following financial deprivation or Tsunami.

Bike riding through the hill and tea country stopping for picnics by waterfalls.

A wildlife jeep safari through Udawalwe National Park , sighting all wildlife.

A cultural trip to Kandy to see the great Temple of the Tooth and the famous elephant orphanage.

Conditions that may affect Eco Team grading of trekking trails.
Please remember that it is impossible to be absolutely precise about how hard a walk may be, as there may be many contributory factors. The main benefit of grading is to provide you with an overall indicator to compare one walk against another. We at Eco Team, therefore look at the following 6 factors before deciding the grade:
• Length of trek and length of walking day.
• Average altitude and altitude gain and loss.
• Trail conditions.
• Level of backpacking.
• Temperature range and likely weather conditions.
• Level of humidity can jump from 70% to 90% very easily
• Remoteness to services and general level of comfort.
* Please note the weather condition in Sri Lanka: Lowlands- tropical, average 27C Central Hills- cooler, with temperatures dropping to 14C. the south-east monsoon brings the rain to the western, south western and central regions from May to July, while the north-western monsoon occurs in the north and east in December and January. Sri Lanka boasts a good climate for holiday-makers throughout the year.

A (Easy)
Experience is not necessary at this level: anyone who is in good health and fit enough to enjoy a good weekend hill walk can manage an A-grade. Usually, A-grade treks are short in duration and at lower altitudes; often they are optional, giving a chance of a rest day. However, walking always involves some exertion: trails are seldom flat, and you must still expect to have a reasonable amount of ascent and descent. You would normally walk for 4 to 7 hours during the day.

B (Moderate)
Most people who enjoy a weekend in the hills or mountains at home are capable of undertaking a trek at this level: you need to be in good health and reasonably fit, and you will almost certainly be taking regular exercise. A trek could be graded B either as a fairly easy medium-duration walk, or as a harder, shorter walk. Some walking at higher altitude and the occasional longer or more difficult day may be involved, but generally conditions underfoot will be fair. A walking day would normally be between 5 to 8 hours long and no experience is necessary.

C (Strenuous)
For any trek at this level, fitness is most important and you may have to improve yours before departure. Most C grade treks are equivalent to extended walking in mountainous terrain at home, but usually at significantly higher altitudes; climate and remoteness can also play a part. Walking days are usually between 6 to 8 hours although there may be some longer days for pass-crossing or similar. Previous trekking experience is desirable but not essential if you are confident of your physical condition.

D (Tough)
At this level we recommend previous experience of trekking, preferably at altitude, and you need complete confidence in your physical condition and your ability to trek for many days without a break and be able to cope with difficult underfoot terrain such as difficult paths on steep mountainsides. Extremes of altitude and weather may also be encountered. Stamina is very important, as walking days can be from 6 to 9 hours or even longer on pass-crossing days.

Client's Testimonials

You know guys a lot of people pass ‘Belihuloya’ as just another town on the Colombo Badulla road. The most they would do is stop at the rest house and have a dip in the cool waters of the Belihuloya that flows next to it. But how many actually realise that there is this amazing eco culture that surrounds the Belihuloya? I think we have Eco team to thank for bringing this marvellous location to the limelight.

The nature trail from Kinchigune to Belihuloya was probably the best time we've had in our whole lives. The trekker was so patient with us amateur trekkers and never grumbled when we kept calling him to help take off the leeches who seemed passionate about us. We loved the walk through the shrub jungle and through the paddy fields and crossing the river at several points was sooo cool. The last crossing where we had water up to our wastes and the current was so strong was amazing. I have to admit there was a single moment where I felt scared but the trekker was obviously a Pro and calmed our fears instantly. He didn’t seem to mind going out of his way take us off the beaten track to see a small waterfall and was so patient with us when we wanted to stop at almost every mushroom to take pictures:-) By the way we found a range of mushrooms (fascinating for photography) and countless butterflies and heard a myriad of bird sounds though we could not spare the hours to sit and watch them. The fauna and flora right throughout the trek was brilliant and it’s not surprising that Dileep ended up taking more than 500 photos :-)

The canoeing in the Samanalawewa Tank was another novel and super experience…and here too the trekker was so patient and nice that we were able to really enjoy the activity…at first we were blundering with oars but later caught on and managed to paddle quite well. The scenery around us was breathtaking and particular the shadow of the mountain on the water was so pretty and so reminiscent of scenes from Norway (a land of mountains and lakes).

Last but not least a mention of the food at River garden Lodge is a must …it was yummy and we really ate like we’ve never eaten before:-)

Well I could go on and on... but will stop now. As we spoke to you about directly there were a few hitches in the journey but overall we had a super time. So thank you to you and Eco team (for organising the trip) and especially Pradeep (the manager at the River Garden hotel) and his team for the superb hospitality and food, most specially to Jayasekera the Trekker for his patience and care. Our visit to Belihuloya in December 2009 was a wonderful and rare experience.
