WAIKKALA
Waikkala is located in the Puttalam District, which falls into the
dry zone category. Waikkala is in the midst of marine, coastal,
estuarine, mangroves, marshland and man made habitat systems. All
of these have contributed to the avifaunal diversity visible in
the immediate surrounding. Much of the avifauna is characteristically
wetland. More than 60 species of birds can be observed here.
NEGAMBO
Bustling Negambo town is a historically interesting place strongly
influenced by the Catholic Church. The narrow strip of land between
the lagoon & the sea and the many cannels make for a good exploring.
The Dutch captured the town from the Portuguese in 1640, lost it
again in the same year, and then captured it again in 1644. The
British then took it from them in 1796 without a struggle. Negambo
was one of the most important sources of cinnamon during the Dutch
era, and there are still reminders of the European days.

RITIGALA
NATURE RESERVE
Ritigala – kanda (the Ritigala mountain) lying in the southern
part of the North central Province of Sri Lanka, bears a legendary
historical & monastic past unsurpassed by any other mountain
retreat in the country. Although at 766ms. (2,513ft) the altitude
of Ritigala is comparatively low. More unexpected for such
a low altitude is the climate at the summit is cooler and
has a greater rainfall during the north-east monsoon than
any part of the dry zone which surrounds it. With such unusual
climate it is not surprising to find the upper reaches of
the mountain supporting a vigorous and plentiful flora with
a wide variety species quite distinct from the flat dry country
below.
DAMBULLA, an ancient
city, is known for its beautiful Cave temples and a huge Buddha
statue. The history of the 5 caves containing over 150 images
of Buddha goes back to 1st century BC when king Valagambahu
took refuge here. This place is worth visiting not only for

countryside you can get from the hill.

It is characterized by a beautiful
landscape of rolling hills, covered
in upper montane forest and wet patana
grassland. In general, the forests
are seen on the hilltops or upper
slopes, and the grasslands in the
valleys and lower slopes, eventually
giving way to wetland habitats. Spanning
approximately 10,000 hectares the
park is also home to a wide variety
of flora (57 species, 29 endemic to
Sri Lanka) and 24 species of mammals
such as elk, deer, giant squirrel,
wild boar, wild hare, porcupine and
leopard. For bird enthusiasts, there

including many migratory birds. The
Plains also feature many interesting

(Morning visit) |
| The key attraction
of the ADAM’S
PEAK WILDERNESS SANCTUARY (SRI PADA)
is the peak itself. The 2,243 meters
peak has a great significance for
various different religions. The huge
footprint at the summit is believed
by Buddhists to be that of Lord Buddha
(‘Sri Pada’), whilst Christians suggest
that it was where Adam first set foot
on earth, and Hindus claim that it
belongs to Lord Shiva. As a result,
the peak has been a pilgrimage centre
for over 1000 years. Whatever it’s
religious significance, this famous
landmark offers some breathtaking
views of the hill country. The majority
of climbers begin their ascent at
night in order to arrive at the top
in time for a magical sunrise when
the mystical shadow of the peak is
perfectly cast across the clouds.
It is one of those truly unique moments
that will live on in your memory long

because it is home to 95% of the endemic birds
of Sri Lanka! Named as a world heritage site
in 1989, this lowland evergreen rain forest
is steeped in deep legend and mystery. The
