Important Landmarks

Started mainly based on the coffee cultivation. * Started in 1864 * Initial section Colombo - Ambepussa. From 1864 to 1924 extended to Kandy , Nawalapitiya, Hatton , Nanu Oya, Bandarawela up to BadullaWhen Coffee cultivation was devastated it was replaced by Tea, which became a very successful.With the success of the Tea Cultivation Railway became more and more popular and profitable.

  • Kelaniya 1864. 5km. MSL 3.96m. (Wanawasala)
  • Greater dist between Col-Ragama bordering Muthurajawela. Ragama first Junction
  • Unlike the main road, the rail road runs generally thru plantations: mainly coconut and paddy and greenery rather than towns and busy residential areas. Virtually in the every valley between hillocks is a paddy field.
  • 1to 2 km beyond Meerigama the change in environment evident by presence of many hills around. Suddenly, a tunnel(125.3m): the first of 43.
  • Next station is Ambepussa. First section of this line Colombo-Ambepussa in 1864. Look for the old station by the side. Dist 54km. MSL 55.48m
  • Maha Oya bride. River departs after bridge. Meets next at Bujjomuwa station. In a while you see Thulhiriya Factory. Alawwa stn. Little Maha Oya Departs.
  • Polgahawela; 2 nd Junction -. Northern Line and Upcountry Line. Look for Alagalla Rock.
  • Rambukkana. Little after starts the climb towards Paradise . 2 tunnels close togegher. Kadigamuwa
  • Uthuwankanda. On left is Alagalla Mountain . Height 1143.07m. Was visible from Pologhawela. Long tunnel 419.9m long.
  • Ihala Kotte stn. Little later, vast open southern valley visible. Where, Alagalla mountain and another mountain join hence, Dekanda (two mountains).
  • Bible rock or Bathale Gala. Flat area of about 10 acrs on summit. Mountain range seen at distance is Dolosbage Mountains . Looking back can see Alagalla mountain capped with a giant rock.
  • Most perilous section of line. Cut around rock with steep slope. Hakura wetichcha gala. Several workers have died and more injured while at work.
  • Balana Stn. Station built below the track. Historically important place. Only point to enter the Kandyan Kingdom
  • Moragolla tunnel. 359.74m. coming out can see the main road.
  • Lions Mouth.
  • Kadugannawa. Tower - Capt Dawson. Main road constructed 30yrs before the railroad in 1832. this is where rail road and the main road come together.
  • First difficult stretch Rambukkana to Kadugannawa.1500ft climb in 13miles (20.917km)
  • Peradeniya. 3 rd Junction. Important & unique station where generally upcountry train doesn't go to the station itself. Stn master come to a small platform built for the purpose and gives the tablet. Station is a triangular form. Co-Bdl line, Co-kdy line and Bdl-Kdy lines.
  • Up to Peradeniya in 1867. Old bldg exists. Hanthane and Nillambe range beyond. Campus
  • Gampola - 1873. Prone to floods. Has post indicating flood limits. Mahaweli river gets close. Udarata Menike ETA 1230hrs
  • Ulapane - 1874. Mahaweli and a Sangili Palama visible.
  • Nawalapitiya. Remains "Running Shed" popular during steam engines. Kabaragala mountain.
  • 1km from Nawalapitiya - seylam bridge special as without centre support pillar.
  • Inguru Oya, tributary of Mahaweli runs parallel for some time
  • Dekinda bridge special place with two tunnels on either side * Galaboda Stn.
  • Steep climb. To reach next stn Watawala on the other side of mountain line goes around it for 5miles. Watawala. Island's highest rainfall. Beyond Hatton Valley . Co-Htn main road close. Area prone to earth slips.
  • Rosella. Specialty stn can be seen closely is reached after long detour. Later Co-Htn main rd, Seven Virgins range visible. Sri Padha visible at plcs.
  • Hatton. Little while, longest tunnel Singimale - 612yds/ 559.75m. Wehi Lihini nests Inside tunnel When emerge on other side environment is quite different. Looking back at giant mount get the impression that it has separated two different lands. No large tall mountains but hillocks covered with tea.
  • Kotagala. 1883.
  • St. Clairs. Thalawakele . Famous for best Tea. Immediately after station bridge over Kothmala Oya. Great Western mountain range in vicinity. This section Thalawakele-Watagoda has most wonderful bends and corners in this line. Rail line runs parallel to it up to Nanuoya.
  • Watagoda .1883. a place called bottle neck. To reach a point 1-1/2 miles line goes for 6
  • Small station Great Western at base of large rock peak. MSL 5000ft. View of vast area. Numerous mountain ranges.
  • Nanuoya . 1883. another important station which is only 5miles from Nuwara Eliya. During colonial days narrow gauge railway line ran from here up to Udu Pussellawa connecting Nuwara Eliya. 1-1/2km from station astounding view of Sri Padha. On left Meepilimana Mountain range. As you get closer to Ambewela a difference is evident. Vegetable plots replaces tea plantations. And the forest on either side. Steep escarp on right side and large mountain ranges beyond, covered with thick dense forest.
  • Elgin Falls. Ambewela. Milk Powder Factory 1 km towards Pattipola.
  • Pattipols Station. 1893. Highest Railway Station . Immediately after forest area. Here sign board indicating Summit Level -6125ft. little later tunnel (Pattipola Tunnel -321.95m). Important tunnel as a border of two provinces. Entrance from Central Province and exit into Uva Province . Tunnel involved with many super natural stories.
  • Ohiya Closest Station to Maha Eliya ( Horton Plains). Section between Ohiya and next station Idalgashinna has an amazing number of Thirteen (13) tunnels.
  • Idalgashinna another important station. 1893. Situation on an amazing stretch resembling the spine of a lizard it offers two unbelievably great views on both sides with the view on left running beyond Boralanda, Welimada up to Udu Pussellawa, Hakgala and on the right running beyond Beragala down to the coast at Hambantota. Udawalawa Reservoir clearly visible.
  • Haputhale. 1893.
  • Diyathalawa.
  • Bandarawela. 1893. The surrounding becomes fantastic again closer to Ella. The Southern plain down to hambantota, Thissa and Katharagama open to view. Rawana Mountain visible. Udarata Menike ETA 1740hrs
  • Ella. 1918 . Immediately after tunnel no.40. Demodara Bridge : Nine Arc bridge or the bridge of nine skies. Pillars as tall as 90ft. no iron used. Only stone and concrete. Not to cross a bridge but to connect two mountains. Interesting story connected to this. Although English engineer was present most of work was done by a SL Bass, who interviewed workers before recruiting. One question he asked was how much rice the applicant can eat. Only persons who could eat at least a measure of rice (hal) were recruited as strong men were needed to raise such big stone blocks.
  • Demodara. 1921. Another very important station where, the line loops and goes through a tunnel under the line again. The station is on top of the tunnel. -Looping the Loop- . (After the station the line runs around a small hill for about a km and enters a tunnel beneath the station. Immediately after the tunnel is another beautiful bridge with 60 - 70ft pillars . Across Demodara Oya.)
